Medical video production is video made to a clinical standard: every claim reviewed, every anatomical detail checked, and every asset built to survive regulatory sign-off. That review layer is what separates it from ordinary corporate video, and it is what you are actually paying for.
The 10 companies below are compared on price, location, and whether they lead with animation or live-action. That last split matters more than any ranking: half this market cannot shoot in a theatre and half cannot model an organ, so it narrows your shortlist before you make a single call.
Disclosure: this article is published by F. Learning Studio, which appears first in the list below. Competitor pricing, clients, and capabilities were compiled from public sources and each company’s own site at the time of writing. Verify current figures directly before you commit.
Types of Medical Videos to Improve Communication
Each format serves a distinct purpose, and the type you need determines both the style and which companies are worth approaching. A studio that films hospital tours is rarely the right choice for a mechanism-of-action animation.
| Type | Description | Suggested Video Styles | Example |
| Patient Education Video | Simplifies complex conditions, treatments, or procedures to help patients understand their care. | 2D animation, whiteboard, live-action with doctor narration | Watch a patient education example |
| Clinic/Hospital Tour | Showcases facilities, staff, and services to build trust and familiarity before a visit. | Live-action walkthrough, drone footage, voiceover | Watch a hospital tour example |
| Medical Training Video | Educates healthcare professionals on procedures, tools, or protocols. | Live-action, screencast with voiceover, 2D, 3D animation | Watch a medical training example |
| Surgical Procedure Video | Demonstrates surgical techniques for education, certification, or documentation. | Live-action (in-theater), annotated video, 3D animation | Watch a surgical procedure example |
| Medical Device Demonstration | Explains how patients or professionals use or operate a medical device. | 2D and 3D animation | Watch a device demo example |
| Pharmaceutical Explainer Video | Introduces how a drug works, its benefits, or mechanisms in an easy-to-grasp format. | 2D/3D animation, kinetic typography, infographic-style video | Watch a pharma explainer example |
| Regulatory Compliance Video | Provides training or awareness about regulations such as HIPAA, FDA, or workplace safety. | Whiteboard, motion graphics, live-action with on-screen text | Watch a compliance video example |
Animation or live-action? The question that halves your shortlist
Look down the table above and you will see the split already: tours and surgical documentation need a camera, while device mechanisms and drug action need a model. Three questions settle it for your own project.
- Can the subject be photographed? A stent deploying inside an artery cannot. Neither can a drug binding to a receptor, a disease progressing, or a policy. For those, animation is not a stylistic preference.
- Does a real clinician need to be visible? Trust-building content such as consultant introductions and hospital tours loses its whole point in animation.
- How often will the guidance change? Dosages, device generations, and protocols update. Re-rendering an animated scene is cheap; re-shooting a theatre is not.
Many projects need both, which is why the comparison table below flags each company as animation-led, live-action-led, or genuinely both.
How Much Does Healthcare Video Production Cost?
These are medical-specific ranges and they sit above general animation rates. Clinical accuracy adds a review layer, bespoke anatomical or device modelling replaces stock assets, and live-action in a clinical setting carries costs a corporate shoot never meets: theatre access, clinical supervision, sterile-field compliance, and patient consent.
| Medical videos (based on styles) | Price range (per finished minute) |
| Whiteboard | $1,000 – $5,000 |
| 2D animation | $2,000 – $8,000 |
| 3D animation | $8,000 – $15,000 |
| Live-action | $10,000 – $50,000 |
| Documentary | $1,000 – $10,000 |
Where inside each band you land is set by three things: how many custom assets are modelled rather than reused, how many languages the video ships in, and how many rounds of clinical and legal review happen after production has started. The third is the one most budgets forget.

Producing medical animation since 2016
A decade of medical projects buys something specific: a process that already assumes a clinical reviewer, a regulatory cycle, and late guideline changes, rather than treating each as an exception. The same accurate model is then built out twice, once for clinicians and once for patients, so the two versions cannot drift apart.
Custom medical animation with clinical sign-off built into the schedule
No template libraries. Whiteboard, character-driven, and hand-drawn styles are all available, chosen for the audience rather than the budget. More importantly, your subject-matter expert sits in the schedule at script and storyboard stage, which is where corrections are free. Our production process sets out who signs off at each point.
Case study: SimpleNursing
Our longest-running healthcare partnership is with SimpleNursing, one of the leading nursing education technology companies in the US.
The problem: SimpleNursing needed to improve online courses covering pharmacology, physiology, and cardiology, where dense technical content was hard for students to retain. They wanted a partner fluent in both animation and the medical subject matter.
What we built:
- Simplified without losing accuracy: complicated topics turned into clear animated sequences that still satisfied subject-matter review.
- Custom visuals per subject: whiteboard animation, character-driven stories, and anatomical representations, matched to what each topic needed rather than a single house style.
- A production line, not a series of one-offs: dedicated scriptwriters, animators, and project managers, so a course-length library could be produced at a consistent rate.
- Close collaboration: every visual, voiceover, and fact aligned with SN’s own subject experts before animation began.
The results:
- Reach: more than 200,000 nursing students studied with the animated courses.
- Brand growth: the animated content contributed to an audience of over 500,000 social media followers.
- Student feedback: Trustpilot reviews repeatedly cite the animations as what made difficult topics click.
- Competitive position: the animated library became a differentiator in a crowded nurse-training market.

What to Look for in a Medical Video Production Company
Every studio will say they handle healthcare. These are the questions that separate the ones who have from the ones who would like to.
1. Who signs off on medical accuracy, and at which stage?
Accuracy is the product, not a feature of it. The question that matters is procedural: does your subject-matter expert review at script and storyboard stage, or after animation exists? Corrections at storyboard are effectively free. The same correction after animation begins is paid for twice, once to build the original and once to rebuild it.

2. Have you been through medical, legal and regulatory review before?
This is the question most buyers forget and the one that moves timelines the most. If your video carries a product claim, names an indication, or shows a device in use, it will face MLR review before release, and reviewers comment on narration wording as readily as on visuals.
A studio that has done this before will tell you to get the script through review before storyboard, and will ask in advance who holds the pen when a reviewer’s wording does not fit the animation timing. A studio that has not will be surprised by both. The same applies to HIPAA, GDPR, and patient consent if any real patient material is involved.
3. Can you show work for my exact audience?
Healthcare is not one audience. Content for surgeons, for newly diagnosed patients, and for procurement committees are three different crafts, and a strong portfolio in one says little about the others. Ask for the closest match to your brief, not the showreel.
4. Which formats do you actually produce in-house?
Several companies on this list subcontract either the animation or the filming. That is not a problem in itself, but you should know it before the project rather than during it, because it affects who you talk to when something needs changing.

5. What does your quote include, and what does it not?
Ask specifically: is the price per finished minute or per project, how many custom assets are included, how many revision rounds and at which stages, how many voice-over languages, and do you receive the source files. A quote that is vague on those is not cheaper. It is the same price with the risk moved onto you.
6. Can I speak to a healthcare client with a similar brief?
Reviews and testimonials are useful, but a fifteen-minute call with a past client in your sector tells you what no case study will: how they handled a clinical reviewer who changed their mind in week six. Reluctance here is more informative than any award badge.

Tips for Successful Collaboration with Your Chosen Healthcare Video Production Company
Choosing well is half the job. These nine habits decide whether the project lands on time.
- Define your goals early: name one primary audience and one thing they should be able to do afterwards.
- Provide detailed briefs: brand guidelines, verified medical facts, tone preferences, and any regulatory requirements.
- Share reference materials: examples you like and, just as usefully, examples you do not.
- Book your subject matter experts in advance: a clinician who cannot review until week five delays everything behind them. Get their availability before the schedule is set.
- Clarify compliance needs upfront: HIPAA, FDA, MLR, and legal disclaimers all cost calendar time, not production time. Surface them at brief stage.
- Give consolidated feedback: gather every stakeholder comment into one list per round. Contradictory notes are the most common source of overrun.
- Be open to creative input: trust their storytelling judgment while holding the line on accuracy.
- Argue at storyboard: that is exactly what storyboard stage is for, and the last point where disagreement is free.
- Decide distribution early: social, LMS, patient portal, or conference screen all change aspect ratio, runtime, and captioning.
Where to Start
Work through it in this order: pick your video type, answer the animation-or-live-action question, use the comparison table to shortlist two or three companies that match your region and budget, then ask all six questions on the first call. Most failed medical video projects are decided before anyone opens a script.
Shortlisting studios? Bring your clinical reviewer to the first call.
Tell us the condition, procedure or device, who has to understand it, and who signs off on accuracy. In 30 minutes you will get a scoped figure, a recommendation on 2D versus 3D, and where the review cycle needs to sit in your timeline. If you would rather see it than discuss it, we will animate a short sample of your own subject at no cost.

FAQs About Medical Video Production
What is medical video production?
Medical video production is video made to a clinical standard: every claim reviewed by a subject-matter expert, every anatomical or device detail checked, and every asset built to survive regulatory sign-off. That review layer is what separates it from ordinary corporate video production, and it is the main thing the higher price buys.
How much does medical video production cost?
Per finished minute, whiteboard runs $1,000 to $5,000, 2D animation $2,000 to $8,000, 3D animation $8,000 to $15,000, live-action $10,000 to $50,000, and documentary $1,000 to $10,000. These sit above general animation rates because clinical accuracy adds a review layer, bespoke modelling replaces stock assets, and clinical filming carries theatre access, supervision, and consent costs.
Should I choose animation or live-action for a medical video?
Three questions decide it. Can the subject be photographed? A stent deploying inside an artery or a drug binding to a receptor cannot. Does a real clinician need to be visible, as in a hospital tour or consultant introduction? And how often will the guidance change, since re-rendering an animated scene is cheap while re-shooting a theatre is not.
What should I ask a medical video production company before signing?
Six things: who signs off on medical accuracy and at which stage, whether they have been through medical, legal and regulatory review before, whether they can show work for your exact audience, which formats they produce in-house versus subcontract, exactly what the quote includes and excludes, and whether you can speak to a healthcare client with a similar brief.
Does a medical video need MLR or regulatory review?
If it carries a product claim, names an indication, or shows a device in use, it will need medical, legal and regulatory review before release. Reviewers comment on narration wording as readily as on visuals, so send the script through review before storyboard and agree in advance who resolves conflicts between a reviewer’s wording and the animation timing.
How do I keep a medical video project on schedule?
Book your subject-matter experts before the schedule is set, surface compliance requirements at brief stage rather than at delivery, consolidate all stakeholder feedback into one list per round, and settle disagreements at storyboard. In medical projects the review cycle, not the production, is usually what moves the launch date.
